Gold Karat Explained: 18K, 22K, 24K and Plated Jewellery

Walk into any jewellery shop in India and you will hear it within minutes: 22 carat, 18 carat, 24 carat. Everyone nods. Very few people can explain what the number actually means, and even fewer know what it means when the jewellery is plated.

Let us fix that. Karat tells you how much pure gold is mixed into a gold alloy. Plating is a different idea altogether: a thin gold-coloured layer over another metal. Mixing the two up is the most common mistake buyers make.

What Does Karat Mean?

Pure gold is too soft to wear every day, so it is mixed with other metals such as copper or silver to make it stronger. Karat (K) is the measure of how much of the mix is pure gold, counted out of 24 parts.

  • 24K means 24 out of 24 parts, which is pure gold. Beautiful, but very soft.
  • 22K means 22 parts gold and 2 parts other metals. This is the classic choice for traditional Indian jewellery.
  • 18K means 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals. It is harder, which makes it popular for jewellery with stones and for daily wear.

A higher karat is richer in colour and purer, a lower karat is tougher. Neither is better in every situation. It depends on what you want the jewellery to do.

Karat vs Plating: Not the Same Thing

This is where people get confused. Karat describes a solid gold alloy. Plating describes a coating.

When jewellery is gold plated, a thin layer is applied over a base metal. The piece is not solid gold, and it is not priced or valued like solid gold. Its job is to give you the look of gold at a very different cost.

You may see "24K" written in connection with our 1 Gram Gold Plated and Gold Forming ranges. That refers to the gold-coloured plating layer on the piece, not to a solid gold chain. We use the word only in that context, and never for plain gold plated, stainless steel or rose gold pieces.

5 Things to Check Before You Buy Plated Jewellery

  1. Read the words carefully. "Gold plated" and "1 Gram Gold Plated" mean a coating. Be wary of any listing that just says "gold" with no qualifier.
  2. Ask what the base metal and finish are. It affects weight, feel and how the piece wears.
  3. Look at the clasp and links. Tidy joints and a firm clasp tell you more about quality than the label does.
  4. Check the care and exchange terms. Honest sellers tell you exactly what is covered and what is not.
  5. Compare in daylight. Photos can mislead. Product videos and close-ups help.

So, Which Karat Is Right for You?

If you want an investment

That is solid gold territory, and it is outside what we sell. Plated jewellery is for style, not for storing value.

If you want the gold look without the heavy spend

Gold plated jewellery gives you the look for weddings, festivals and everyday outfits. Our comparison of 1 Gram Gold Plated, gold plated and imitation jewellery explains the differences in simple terms.

If you are buying for daily wear

Choose a design with strong links, a secure clasp and a simple care routine. Our daily care habits guide shows how.

The golden rule: karat is about what the metal is made of, plating is about what covers it. Know which one you are buying.

Quick Answers (FAQs)

Is 24K gold the best?

It is the purest, but also the softest. That is why most solid gold jewellery uses 22K or 18K.

Is gold plated jewellery real gold?

It has a gold-coloured layer on top of another metal. It is not solid gold.

What does 1 Gram Gold Plated mean?

It describes a plated range with a very thin gold layer. It is a different category from solid gold jewellery.

Does a higher karat mean better quality?

It means higher gold purity, not automatically better durability or design.

Do you offer any guarantee on plated jewellery?

Our 1 Gram Gold Plated range has a lifetime exchange benefit, where 15% of the original invoice amount is adjusted on a new purchase after verification. We do not give colour or shine guarantees.
