Holi, Rain and Festival Season: How to Protect Your Jewellery

Festival season is gorgeous for jewellery and terrible for jewellery. Gorgeous, because every celebration is an excuse to wear your best. Terrible, because between Holi colours, sudden rain, crowded pandals, sweat and sprays, your favourite piece goes through a lot.

You do not have to skip wearing jewellery. You only have to know when to take it off, how to clean it afterwards, and where to keep it in between. This guide covers all three.

The Big Question: Wear It or Not?

Here is a quick way to decide.

  • Holi play (colours, water, crowds): take it off. Powders and water get into links and clasps, and chemicals in some colours are hard on any finish.
  • Holi evening get-together (dry, clean, dressed up): wear it, after you are fresh and dry.
  • Rain and monsoon outings: wear lighter pieces and keep a cloth handy.
  • Garba, wedding and pooja crowds: wear it, but expect sweat and plan to wipe it afterwards.

Holi: Before, During and After

Before

Put your jewellery in a closed velvet pouch or box, and keep it in a dry cupboard. If you want to wear something small for the day, choose a piece you will not mind getting dirty and skip anything valuable to you.

During

Colours, oil, water and rubbing do not help any finish. The simplest protection is to leave the jewellery at home.

After

Wash off the colour yourself first, then dry your hands and neck fully. Only then put your jewellery back on.

If Colour Gets on Your Jewellery

  1. Do not rub hard. Rubbing pushes powder into the links.
  2. Shake or tap off dry powder gently. Do this over a clean cloth.
  3. Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Then dry immediately with a clean dry cloth.
  4. Never soak it. Water trapped in links and under stones is a problem.
  5. Do not use harsh cleaners, toothpaste or sanitiser. They damage the finish.

Monsoon Care in 5 Steps

  1. Dry it the moment you get home. Rain and humidity are the biggest monsoon problems.
  2. Skip the bathroom shelf. Steam is humidity in disguise.
  3. Keep a small cloth in your bag. A quick wipe can save a lot of trouble.
  4. Store pieces in a dry box. Our velvet jewellery boxes keep pieces separate and tidy.
  5. Wear lighter pieces. Save heavy statement jewellery for dry days.

Diwali, Navratri and Wedding Crowds

Sweat, close contact and snagging dupattas are the real risks. Put your jewellery on last, fasten the clasp properly, and check it before you leave. Planning a Garba night? See our Garba styling guide.

Travelling for a Festival?

Keep each piece in its own pouch, in your hand luggage rather than checked bags. A small zip pouch stops chains from tangling on the road.

The golden rule: enjoy the festival first, then clean and store your jewellery properly.

Quick Answers (FAQs)

Can I wear jewellery while playing Holi?

We suggest not. Colours and water are tough on all jewellery.

What if my chain gets wet in the rain?

Dry it at once with a soft cloth and let it air-dry fully before storing.

Can I clean gold plated jewellery with water?

Only wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then dry immediately. Do not soak it.

Does gold plated jewellery come with a guarantee against colour change?

No. We do not give colour or shine guarantees on any piece, because it depends on use and care. Our 1 Gram Gold Plated range has a lifetime exchange benefit that adjusts 15% of the original invoice amount against a new purchase after verification.

How should I store jewellery during the monsoon?

In a dry, closed box or pouch, kept away from bathrooms and open windows.
